The ankle is really two joints working together: the talocrural hinge that points the foot up and down, and the subtalar joint beneath it that tilts the foot in and out. Every tendon travelling to the foot passes through it, and the ligaments on the outside are the ones that give way when the ankle rolls. People come to a therapist for the ankle because of a sprain that never fully settled, a sense of the ankle giving way on uneven ground, swelling and lost movement, and limited upward bend that shows up as trouble squatting or going down stairs.
