Regio glutealis
In Review
The gluteal region is the three gluteal muscles layered over the back of the pelvis — maximus as the body's main hip extender, medius and minimus keeping the pelvis level on one leg — with the deep rotators, including piriformis, underneath and the sciatic nerve passing among them. This is the engine room for standing up, climbing and sprinting. People come to a therapist for the glutes because of deep buttock ache from long sitting, weakness that shows up as the pelvis dropping or the knee falling in, tenderness over the sit bone, and pain travelling down the back of the leg.
