The head is the bony vault of the skull together with the soft tissue that covers it — the scalp, the muscles of facial expression, and the muscles that close the jaw. It carries the eyes, ears, nose and mouth, and it sits balanced on top of the neck, which means the muscles at the base of the skull are working quietly all day just to hold it level. People most often come to a therapist for the head because of tension-type headache, tenderness through the temples and the base of the skull, or pain that travels up from a stiff neck.
