Lumbricals of the foot
Musculi lumbricales pedis
In Review
Four worm-like muscles in the sole that are unusual in having no bony origin at all — they hang off the tendons of the long toe flexor and pull on the tendon sheets on top of the toes. That arrangement lets them do something no other muscle can: bend the toes at the knuckle while keeping them straight along their length, flattening the toes onto the floor rather than curling them under. That flat, spread contact is what gives the foot a stable platform to balance on and push from. When they drop out, the toes claw instead of flattening, contact area shrinks, and balance suffers.
