Supraspinous fossa

Fossa supraspinata

The supraspinous fossa is the shallow hollow on the back of the shoulder blade above the scapular spine. It is filled by exactly one muscle: the supraspinatus takes origin from it and runs out under the acromion to the top of the arm bone. That is the rotator cuff muscle that starts the arm lifting away from the side and helps hold the humeral head into its socket.
