Crural fascia

Fascia cruris

In Review

The dense stocking of fascia that wraps the whole lower leg from knee to ankle. It fuses to the subcutaneous front and inner edge of the shin bone on both sides, which is why the shin feels like bare bone under the skin, and it sends partitions inwards to the fibula that close the leg muscles into four separate compartments. Above it is continuous with the fascial sleeve of the thigh; below it thickens into the retinacula that strap the tendons down across the ankle. It barely stretches, so anything that raises the volume inside one of its compartments raises the pressure inside that compartment rather than being absorbed by the wrapping.
