Intertransverse ligaments

Ligamenta intertransversaria

Small ligaments spanning between the transverse processes of adjacent vertebrae, and the most variable of the spinal ligaments in form: in the neck they are largely replaced by the small intertransverse muscles, in the chest they are rounded cords blended with nearby muscle, and in the low back they are thin membranes. Because they sit out to the side of the spine's axis, the pair on one side is stretched when the trunk bends toward the other. They are slight structures that act in company with the much stronger ligaments in front of and behind the vertebrae rather than alone.
