The jaw region centres on the temporomandibular joint — the hinge just in front of each ear where the mandible meets the skull — and the chewing muscles that drive it: masseter, temporalis and the pterygoids. It is one of the most-used joints in the body, working through every bite, swallow and word. People come to a therapist for the jaw because of clicking or catching when opening, aching through the cheek and temple, difficulty opening wide, or jaw tension tied up with clenching, grinding and stress.
