Medial talocalcaneal ligament

Ligamentum talocalcaneum mediale

Runs from the medial tubercle at the back of the talus down to the rear of the sustentaculum tali — the shelf of bone jutting from the inner side of the heel, which carries the talus like a bracket. The band is short and hidden, tucked between the two bones and behind the tendons curving around the inner ankle. Its restraint is against the heel tilting outward from under the talus. It is worth knowing because that same small shelf also anchors the spring ligament and carries the flexor hallucis longus tendon in a groove beneath it: several of the structures that hold the arch up converge on one thumbnail of bone.
