Nerve to quadratus femoris

Nervus musculi quadrati femoris

A small branch of the sacral plexus that takes the deepest route out of the pelvis. It leaves through the greater sciatic foramen below piriformis and then, unlike everything else in that crowded gap, passes in FRONT of the sciatic nerve and in front of the gemelli and the tendon of obturator internus — so it lies directly on the back of the hip joint capsule. It supplies gemellus inferior and quadratus femoris, and gives an articular twig to the hip joint on the way. That articular branch is why a nerve to two small rotators is also, in part, a nerve of the hip joint itself.
