Peroneus brevis

Musculus fibularis brevis

In Review

The shorter of the two muscles on the outside of the lower leg. It sits closer to the bone than its longer partner and stops at the bump you can feel on the outer edge of the midfoot, so it has the more direct pull: it is the stronger, purer evertor of the two and the first line of defence when the ankle starts to roll inward. Its attachment is also the spot that gets pulled off in a bad ankle sprain — pain there after rolling an ankle deserves attention rather than assumption.
