Popliteus

Musculus popliteus

Popliteus is a small flat triangle hidden at the back of the knee, and it has one job that nothing else can do. When you stand with your legs straight, the knee is not just extended — it is locked, rotated into its most stable position so you can hold yourself up without effort. Something has to unlock it before it can bend, and popliteus is that something: it twists the thigh bone back the other way on the planted shin and the knee is free to move. The founder's system calls this "knee unlocking (rotation control)", which is exactly right. It also pulls the outer meniscus backwards as the knee bends so it does not get trapped, and it helps hold the outer corner of the joint together. Small muscle, first move of every step.
