Tensor fasciae latae

Musculus tensor fasciae latae

In Review

A short muscle in the front pocket of the hip that does its work at a distance. It runs only a hand's breadth down from the front of the iliac crest before handing over to the iliotibial tract, which carries its pull all the way to the outside of the shin. So a small muscle tensions a long fascial strap, flexing, abducting and internally rotating the hip while stiffening the lateral line of the thigh. It is a classic compensator: when gluteus medius is not holding the pelvis, TFL takes over the abduction job it is too small to own — which is exactly why the founder's chart lists TFL in the TIGHT column and gluteus medius in the WEAK one, and why releasing the TFL without strengthening the glute is short-lived relief.
