Proximal commissural ligament

A transverse fascial band lying in a finger web at its proximal edge, where the web skin gives way to the palm. It is part of the continuous palmar fascia — the same fibrous system as the palmar aponeurosis and the natatory ligament — rather than a ligament of any joint, and like the rest of that system it touches no bone. Its name is purely positional: it pairs with the distal commissural ligament at the free edge of the same web. Both are most fully developed in the commissure between the thumb and index finger, where the web has to open wide around an object and still hold its shape when the thumb loads against it.
