Anterior tibial artery

Arteria tibialis anterior

The anterior tibial artery is the popliteal artery's other terminal branch. It passes forward through a gap in the membrane between the shin bones into the front of the leg, then runs down on that membrane with the deep peroneal nerve, supplying the muscles that lift the foot. At the ankle it crosses onto the top of the foot and is renamed the dorsalis pedis artery, whose pulse is felt on the instep — the other standard circulation check of the foot.
