Gluteal tuberosity

Tuberositas glutea

The gluteal tuberosity is a roughened ridge on the back of the upper thigh bone, running down from below the greater trochanter to join the linea aspera. The deep, lower fibres of the gluteus maximus insert here — the rest of that muscle ends in the IT band instead — so this is the part of the glute that pulls directly on bone to extend the hip.
