Lateral malleolus

Malleolus lateralis

The lateral malleolus is the knob on the outer side of the ankle: the lower end of the fibula. It reaches further down than its counterpart on the inside, forming a deep outer wall for the ankle joint. Three ligaments fan out from it to hold the ankle against rolling inwards, and the front one of the three — the anterior talofibular ligament — is the one injured in the ordinary rolled ankle. The peroneal tendons run in a groove behind it on their way into the foot.
