Posterior talocalcaneal ligament

Ligamentum talocalcaneum posterius

The shortest of the three talocalcaneal bands, connecting the lateral tubercle of the posterior process of the talus to the upper and medial part of the heel bone behind the joint. It closes off the back of the subtalar joint, filling the narrow slot where the two bones overlap at the rear of the hindfoot. Its fibres are short and run almost horizontally, so what it resists is the two bones pulling apart rather than tilting. It sits deep in the crowded space behind the ankle, in front of the Achilles tendon and the fat pad that separates them.
