Nuchal fascia

Ligamentum nuchae

The fibrous midline sheet down the back of the neck, running from the bump at the base of the skull to the cervical spinous processes. In humans it is a fairly thin partition that gives attachment to trapezius, splenius capitis and rhomboid minor, and it helps hold the weight of the head without constant muscular work. Because it sits exactly where the head meets the neck, it is a common site of tenderness in tension-type headache and posture-related neck pain.
