Quadratus lumborum — deep points

The quadratus lumborum's deep points sit closer to the spine than its superficial ones, and they refer somewhere quite different: down into the sacroiliac joint and the lower buttock rather than out along the belt line. That makes them one of the most valuable records here, because SI joint pain is a diagnosis that gets made from a location — the client puts a finger just beside the tailbone — and this muscle can put pain in exactly that spot from several inches away. A therapist working an SI joint that will not settle should palpate the deep quadratus lumborum before concluding anything about the joint.
