Femoral artery

Arteria femoralis

The femoral artery is the main artery of the leg. It is the continuation of the external iliac artery, renamed as it passes beneath the inguinal ligament into the thigh, where it lies superficially in the femoral triangle and is easily felt in the groin. Its largest branch, the deep artery of the thigh, supplies the thigh muscles and the head of the femur. The main trunk then tunnels through the adductor canal on the inner thigh and passes behind the knee to become the popliteal artery.
