Maxilla

In Review

The maxilla is the upper jaw. The paired bones carry the upper teeth and build most of the hard palate, the floor of each eye socket and the sides of the nasal opening. Unlike the mandible it does not move — it is fixed to the rest of the face — so it is the fixed platform the lower jaw closes against. Several small muscles of facial expression arise from its surface.
