Calcaneofibular ligament

Ligamentum calcaneofibulare

A rounded cord running downward and backward from the tip of the outer ankle bone to a small tubercle on the outer surface of the heel bone. It is the only ligament of the ankle that crosses two joints — the one between the leg and the talus, and the one between the talus and the heel below it — so it restrains both at once. It lies outside the joint capsule, with the two fibularis tendons passing directly over it. Of the three ligaments on the outer side of the ankle, this is the one that tightens as the foot is pulled up toward the shin.
