Talus

Talus

The talus is the bone that links the leg to the foot: the shin bone and fibula grip it between their two knobs from above, and it sits on the heel bone below. It is unusual in that no muscle attaches to it anywhere — it is moved entirely by the bones and ligaments around it. Its top surface hinges with the shin for pointing and flexing the foot; its underside joint with the heel bone produces the rolling in and rolling out that lets the foot adapt to uneven ground.
