A roughly cube-shaped bone forming the outer column of the midfoot, wedged between the heel bone behind and the fourth and fifth metatarsals in front. What identifies it is on its underside: a deep oblique groove crossing the sole surface, with a ridge behind it, along which the tendon of fibularis longus turns to run across the sole of the foot. It is the only tarsal bone that carries two metatarsals, and it is easily located by tracing backwards from the prominent tuberosity at the base of the fifth metatarsal.
