A slender metatarsal whose base articulates with the cuboid and the lateral cuneiform, straddling the boundary between the foot's inner and outer columns. It is shorter than the third and longer than the fifth, continuing the taper toward the outer border of the foot, and its sides carry facets for both neighbouring metatarsals.
