The largest of the three wedge-shaped bones in front of the navicular, sitting at the top of the foot's inner column between the navicular behind and the first metatarsal in front. Its wedge points the opposite way to the other two — broad on the sole surface and narrow on top — which is part of why the inner border of the foot rises into an arch rather than lying flat. Two important tendons meet on it from opposite directions: tibialis anterior attaches to its inner and under surface, and fibularis longus, arriving across the sole from the outer side of the leg, attaches beside it.
