Fibula

The fibula is the slender bone on the outside of the lower leg. It carries very little body weight; its work is to be an attachment post for muscle and to build the outer wall of the ankle. Its head at the top takes the outer hamstring and the lateral knee ligament, and the common peroneal nerve winds around its neck just below — close enough to the surface to be squashed. Its lower end is the outer ankle knob, and it reaches further down than the inner one.
