Palmar intermetacarpal ligaments

Ligamenta metacarpalia palmaria

The palm-side members of the same set: short bands running between the adjacent bases of the second to fifth metacarpals, deep in the floor of the palm. Each pairs with a dorsal band across the same gap, and an interosseous band fills the space between the bones themselves, so every junction between two metacarpal bases is bound on three sides. They lie beneath the long flexor tendons and the deep palmar arch, well out of reach from the surface. Their effect is not to produce movement but to remove it — turning four separate bones into the single platform the fingers work from.
