Plantar calcaneonavicular ligament

Ligamentum calcaneonaviculare plantare

The spring ligament: a thick band stretching across the sole of the midfoot from the shelf on the inner side of the heel bone to the underside of the navicular, filling the gap between them. Its upper surface is not ordinary ligament but fibrocartilage, and the head of the talus rests directly on it — so this band is part of the socket the ankle's keystone bone sits in, and the inner arch of the foot is standing on it. The tendon of tibialis posterior passes immediately beneath it and supports it from below. Its common name is misleading: it contains little elastic tissue and does not act as a spring.
