The most important referral pattern in the shoulder, because it sends the client's finger to the wrong place. A point on the BACK of the shoulder blade refers pain deep into the FRONT of the shoulder. The client points under their anterior deltoid and describes it as being inside the joint; the tissue producing it is behind them, in the hollow below the ridge of the shoulder blade. Anyone who takes the pointing finger at face value spends the session treating the front of a shoulder whose problem is at the back. It is also the pattern most often read as a joint or bursal problem, precisely because 'deep in the front of the joint' is what a joint is supposed to feel like — and it is a leading myofascial cause of the shoulder that cannot be lain on at night.
