Posterior ligament of fibular head

Ligamentum capitis fibulae posterius

A single broad band on the back of the joint between the fibular head and the shin bone, passing upward and inward to the back of the lateral tibial condyle. It is thinner and weaker than its partner on the front of the same joint, and the tendon of popliteus crosses over it on its way to the femur. The pair matter because this joint is not decorative: the fibula rotates and glides slightly at its upper end every time the ankle moves, and these two bands are what keep its head seated while that happens.
