Common plantar digital nerves

Nervi digitales plantares communes

The shared trunks that carry sensation into the toes: three from the medial plantar nerve and one from the lateral, running forward between the metatarsal bones beneath the long flexor tendons and dividing at each web into proper digital nerves for the facing sides of adjacent toes. Each passes beneath the deep transverse metatarsal ligament, which holds the metatarsal heads together — a firm structure directly above a nerve that is directly above the ground. The third space is where the medial and lateral plantar contributions meet, so the nerve there is often thicker than its neighbours, and it is the space with a well-known name.
