Superficial Back Line

In Review

A conceptual model, not a proven anatomical structure. Myofascial-chain theory describes the Superficial Back Line as one continuous sheet of pull running from under the toes, up the back of the calf and thigh, over the whole back and scalp, to the brow — the idea being that it holds the body upright against gravity and that tension anywhere along it can show up somewhere else on the line. Clinicians find this a useful lens for explaining why, say, tight calves and a stiff lower back travel together. Treat it as a way of organising thinking, not as a structure you could lift out in dissection: the continuities are not consistently demonstrated and the functional claims are not established by trial evidence.
